What problems are you trying to solve?

Since medical resources are limited, it’s important to find out a solution to assist radiologists to complete chest X-ray reports with greater efficiency, as well as reducing the time required for report production and forwarding.

Why is the problem critically chosen?

Hospitals produce a vast number of radiology images on a daily basis. The golden window is often missed as most chest X-ray reports are unable to achieve timely completion due to insufficient medical manpower and resources. Under the limited resources, it is necessary to alleviate the doctor’s burden by promptly screening for critically urgent and abnormal cases and increasing the report completion efficiency, so these patients can receive intervention as soon as possible. The importance of this issue becomes more apparent as we face the changeable pandemic.

What technologies are applied to solve the problem?

  • Smart AI-powered proactive alarm and second opinion.
  • Convenient AI medical device to assist disease detection.
  • User-friendly DICOM image viewer.
  • Integrated hospital systems
    • PACS
    • HIS/RIS

Any particular areas of improvement?

The aim of the Smart CXR System* is to provide timely calculation through High-Performance Computing (HPC) system, introducing AI-assisted reports, distributary warnings and other functions without disrupting the original clinical procedures. This system will be integrated into the hospital system to provide chest X-rays in the first instance. It will provide lesion information, identification of fine lesions, and allocate classifications, as well as send the results to the corresponding doctor’s report list, provide timely warnings and reminders to prevent errors, assist the doctors with formulating and forwarding reports, promote doctors’ work performance and timely management of critical patients. The professional judgment and interpretation are not affected by the advantages of AI’s high precision, high computing performance, and continuity. This process is already adopted clinically by the Far Eastern Memorial Hospital** and has received the recognition of the Smart Healthcare golden award from the National Healthcare Quality Award.

* The research project has been approved by the IRB. The product is still being verified and will be registered with TFDA this year.

What have you learned and how would the technology advancement potentially or practically help?

We have realized that AI is not omnipotent from the clinical experience of the smart chest X-ray system. However, if we can use their advantages in high precision rate and performance establishing the connection of AI with professionals with the relevant domain knowledge to help, we are able to break free of the unknown fear and distrust of using AI. For example, our system produces the visualization of lesions, clear reasoning as a basis of judgment. Soon, AI will be applied to multiple disciplines with greater versatility. Take the medical field for instance, nodule detection, contouring of radiation therapy, stroke analysis and digital pathological analysis. They will become our helping hands.
